New Stars of Hunger Games Prequel Compared to Original Cast

LOS ANGELES, CA — Fans of the Hunger Games series are eagerly anticipating the release of the prequel film, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. The film follows the story of Haymitch Abernathy, initially portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original series, and takes place 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s journey.
In June 2024, Lionsgate announced the prequel, inspired by Suzanne Collins’ 2025 book, which dives into the violent events of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Joseph Zada has been cast as the younger Haymitch, who was selected as District 12’s tribute for the Games.
Woody Harrelson, who has been a significant part of the original series since its inception, humorously suggested he could use technology to reprise his role as a 16-year-old Haymitch during a March 2025 interview.
In a twist of fate, Jesse Plemons will take on the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, previously played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, making this a poignant moment for ‘The Power of the Dog’ actor. Lionsgate co-president Erin Westerman praised Plemons’ approach, noting it would honor Hoffman while adding his unique interpretation.
Pleasantly contrasting, Kelvin Harrison Jr. will depict Beetee Latier, a character previously portrayed by Jeffrey Wright, while Maya Hawke steps into the shoes of Wiress, a role originally played by Amanda Plummer.
Elle Fanning is set to embody Effie Trinket, a beloved character originally depicted by Elizabeth Banks. According to Westerman, Fanning was the standout choice, capturing the essence fans adored while reimagining the character’s early days.
Moreover, Ralph Fiennes has been cast as the villainous President Snow. This decision follows the late Donald Sutherland’s iconic performance in the original films, which leaves high expectations for Fiennes’ portrayal.
Fans have reacted positively to the casting choices, often noting the striking resemblance between the new actors and those from the original series. As the 2026 release date approaches, anticipation builds among audiences who look forward to seeing how these characters evolve in the prequel.
