Jack Nicklaus Barbara Memorial Tournament 2025

DUBLIN, OhioJack Nicklaus announced his wife, Barbara, as the honoree for the 2025 Memorial Tournament during a heartfelt ceremony on May 28. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the prestigious tournament, and Jack felt it was the perfect time to honor his lifelong partner.

In a personal conversation leading up to last year’s tournament, Jack’s son, Gary, suggested honoring Barbara. Jack initially had not considered it, but agreed after recognizing her significant contributions to the event. “From day one, she’s been the guiding light for good common sense and good judgment,” he said.

To gather opinions, Jack consulted longtime friend Charlie Mechem, the former LPGA commissioner. After receiving enthusiastic support from the Captain’s Club, which selects the honoree, the decision was made.

During the ceremony, Barbara said she was caught off guard when Jack and Charlie presented the news. “I was speechless. I thought, well, that’s not for real. I was flabbergasted,” she recalled.

Many past honorees, including Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson, came before Barbara. Family members, including her five children and 24 grandchildren, were present to support her.

Jack also moved the crowd by singing “I Married an Angel” during the event, evoking both laughter and tears. He highlighted Barbara’s role in shaping not only his career but also the tournament itself.

Barbara Nicklaus has been instrumental in the growth of the Memorial Tournament, which has raised over $52 million for charities, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She is known for her charitable work and leadership in supporting families with medical needs.

The couple’s journey began in college, where they met at Ohio State University. They married in 1960 and have continuously supported each other through the years. Jack credits Barbara with grounding their family and establishing a philanthropic legacy.

As they celebrate her recognition, Barbara reflects on their past and the shared dreams that started with their first meeting as students. “It’s been nothing short of wonderful to watch Jack’s dream become a reality,” she said.
