Microsoft Unveils Xbox Ally X: A New Era for Handheld Gaming

REDMOND, Wash. — Microsoft and Asus have announced the Xbox Ally X, a new handheld gaming device designed for Xbox users. Unveiled during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, this gaming PC aims to improve user experience in handheld gaming.
The Xbox Ally X will launch during the holiday season this year, featuring the powerful AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme APU, 24GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. The base model, the Xbox Ally, will include the Ryzen Z2 A chip, 16GB of RAM, and a smaller 512GB SSD. Both devices will feature a 7-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
Microsoft’s collaboration with Asus focuses on a streamlined gaming experience. The Xbox Ally X will boot directly into a custom Xbox app, designed to simplify access to games and reduce unnecessary processes that slow down performance. The app will also allow users to aggregate games from various storefronts, such as Steam and Epic Games.
During a hands-on demonstration, players reported smooth gameplay while testing Gears of War: Reloaded at high settings, maintaining a consistent 60 frames per second. The Xbox Ally X utilizes a Turbo mode for enhanced performance, but this can affect battery life.
Microsoft promises an ergonomic design, echoing Xbox’s controller layout, which is intended to enhance comfort during extended gaming sessions. However, some concerns remain regarding the device’s bulkiness and potential pricing.
While pricing details are still pending, experts are cautious that high-end specifications may lead to a steep price tag, potentially affecting its market appeal. Microsoft has confirmed it is still fine-tuning the battery life and other elements of the devices before the launch.
Regardless of individual performance capabilities, the Xbox Ally series is expected to influence future handheld gaming PCs positively, pushing software improvements across the gaming landscape.
