Robert Eggers to Direct Dark Adaptation of A Christmas Carol

Los Angeles, CA – Filmmaker Robert Eggers is set to write and direct a new adaptation of Charles Dickens‘ classic holiday tale, “A Christmas Carol,” for Warner Bros. Reports confirm that Eggers is eyeing his frequent collaborator, Willem Dafoe, for the role of Ebenezer Scrooge.
The project follows Eggers’ successful retelling of the Dracula story in his film “Nosferatu,” which grossed $181 million worldwide. Insiders shared that while no official negotiations with Dafoe are underway, Eggers is specifically crafting the Scrooge role with Dafoe in mind.
<p" "A Christmas Carol" tells the story of a miserly old man, Scrooge, who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve, forcing him to confront his past, present, and future. The story was first published in 1843 and has become a staple of Christmas lore, with numerous adaptations over the years, including films featuring Bill Murray and Jim Carrey.
Eggers recently expressed his affinity for the period setting and supernatural elements in Dickens’ narrative, suggesting he will bring a unique and possibly darker interpretation to the material. He is also noted for his stylized visual approach, making this project a fitting match for his talents.
In addition to “A Christmas Carol,” Eggers is currently working on a project titled “Werwulf,” which he plans to begin shooting later this year, further indicating his busy schedule in the coming months.
With a Christmas Day release for “Werwulf” set for 2026, it’s possible that Eggers will become known for dark holiday films, adding another layer to his impressive filmography.
