TEXAS CITY, Texas — A fire broke out at the Marathon Oil refinery in Texas City on Wednesday afternoon, prompting local officials to issue a shelter-in-place order. The Texas City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) reported the incident at 12:25 p.m.

The fire is located on 5th Avenue South, east of 25th Street South. The Texas City Fire Department has responded and is currently on the scene, conducting air monitoring in the area.

Officials announced via social media that the situation is being monitored closely. The shelter-in-place order affects residents from Highway 146 to Bay Street. Residents are advised to stay indoors, close all doors and windows, and turn off air conditioning and heating systems.

Marathon Oil stated that there have been no reported injuries and that all personnel at the refinery are accounted for. The company emphasized that the safety of responders, workers, and the community is the highest priority as they tackle the situation.

“Trained teams are responding to a fire at Marathon’s Galveston Bay refinery. Air monitoring is being deployed in the community as a precaution. The safety of responders, workers, and the community is our first priority,” the company said in a statement.
