LOS ANGELES, CA — The Motion Picture Academy of Arts & Sciences announced Tuesday that Tom Cruise, Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen, and Wynn Thomas will receive Academy Honorary Awards for their significant contributions to film. The awards will take place at the 16th Governors Awards on November 16.

Academy President Janet Yang praised the honorees, stating they are “four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact.” Cruise, often referred to as Hollywood’s last true movie star, has impressed audiences with hit films like “Top Gun” and the “Mission Impossible” series. Despite receiving four Oscar nominations, he has yet to win the coveted award.

Debbie Allen, recognized for her nearly 50-year career in the industry, has excelled as a choreographer, actor, and director. Yang commended her as a “trailblazing choreographer and actor” who has influenced generations. Allen has choreographed the Academy Awards ceremony seven times.

Wynn Thomas has collaborated with renowned director Spike Lee on numerous landmark films, including “Malcolm X” and “Do the Right Thing.” His work on films such as “A Beautiful Mind” and “Hidden Figures” highlights his talent as a production designer, which Yang described as possessing a “visionary eye.”

Dolly Parton, known for her humanitarian efforts, will also receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Yang noted that Parton’s dedication to charitable work embodies the spirit of the award, further enhancing her legacy in cinema.

The event will take place in Hollywood, and it represents a significant moment for the honorees, praising their lasting influence on the film industry.
