Five-Star QB Ryder Lyons Commits to BYU in Historic Pledge

PROVO, Utah — Five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons announced his commitment to Brigham Young University (BYU) on “The Pat McAfee Show” Tuesday, marking the program’s highest-rated pledge since 2002.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Lyons, ranked No. 13 in the nation, joins the Cougars as ESPN’s No. 5 pocket passer for the 2026 class. He will not begin playing for BYU until spring 2027 due to a planned mission trip after graduating high school next year.
Lyons, a native of Folsom, California, previously held unofficial visits to several schools including Oregon and USC but ultimately narrowed his choices to BYU and Oregon before making his decision. He praised BYU for the strong connection he developed with the coaching staff. “They’ve poured a lot into me and made me feel very needed,” he said. “The love they’ve shown … they want me more than any other program.”
In his junior season, Lyons threw for 3,011 yards and 46 touchdowns, showcasing his potential to be a future star for the Cougars. He also rushed for 585 yards and 14 touchdowns, proving to be a dual-threat quarterback. Lyons expressed confidence that his skills will fit well within BYU’s system.
BYU coach Kalani Sitake has been working on building a strong recruiting class for 2026. With Lyons on board, the Cougars are aiming for their best signing haul in nearly a decade, currently positioning themselves with 14 commits, including other top prospects from Utah.
Lyons is the first five-star player to commit to BYU since 247Sports began rating recruits in 2010. His commitment signifies a shift as BYU capitalizes on the changing landscape of college sports, especially with an increased focus on recruiting and NIL opportunities.
Lyons’ commitment is part of a broader recruiting strategy for the Cougars, who are actively enhancing their athletic program offerings and resources. The success in recruiting top talent like Lyons reflects the program’s evolving reputation in college football.
