Detroit Tigers Pitcher Reese Olson Out for Season with Shoulder Injury

DETROIT — Detroit Tigers right-handed starting pitcher Reese Olson will miss the rest of the regular season due to a shoulder strain, team president Scott Harris announced Monday.
The injury leads to the Tigers acquiring Chris Paddack from the Minnesota Twins. Paddack is set to start Wednesday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“Olson came out of his last start and threw a bullpen on Saturday. He reported some shoulder discomfort,” Harris said. “We took an MRI, which showed a shoulder strain. We are not completely through our medical evaluation — more tests are scheduled for tomorrow. The MRI revealed enough to rule him out for the rest of the regular season.”
Before Monday’s game, the Tigers also placed outfielder Parker Meadows on the 10-day injured list due to a strained quadriceps. “If you go back and watch Sunday’s game, he was a little guarded in center field and around the bases,” Harris mentioned. “We approached him about it. Fortunately, we think we caught it early.”
Infielder Andy Ibanez was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take Meadows’ spot on the roster. Infielder/outfielder Ryan Kreidler was also recalled but is expected to be with the team for only a short period.
Olson, 25, had already missed time this season due to inflammation in his right ring finger. He has a record of 4-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 13 starts this year and has struck out 65 batters.
“He has become one of the Tigers’ steadier starters,” Harris added. After missing the first two months of the season with a nerve injury, Meadows has found it tough to regain his form, batting .200 since returning to play.
The Tigers’ rotation is now dealing with multiple injuries, including Alex Cobb, Jackson Jobe, and Ty Madden. Experts speculate that the urgency to trade for Paddack reflects the crucial need for depth amid these setbacks.
Paddack will be making his Tigers debut on Wednesday, filling the void left by Olson in the rotation.
