Tanzania Clinches 1-0 Win Over Mauritania in CHAN 2024 Thriller

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Tanzania secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Mauritania in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 on Wednesday night at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium. The match remained scoreless until the 89th minute when Shomari Kapombe found the net, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The victory puts Tanzania at the top of Group B with six points after two matches, virtually assuring their place in the quarterfinals. Mauritania, on the other hand, has yet to win and now faces an uphill battle to advance in the tournament.
Both teams started defensively, trading tactical blows. Mauritania’s Mohamed Zweide and El Mami Tetah had several attempts, while Tanzania’s Iddy Nado and Feisal Salum pushed hard for a breakthrough. The first half ended without goals as both sides struggled to find their scoring rhythm.
After halftime, Tanzania gained momentum. Substitutes Ahmed Pipino and Nassor Saadun injected pace into the match. They created multiple chances, one of which was saved by Mauritania’s goalkeeper Abderrahmane Sarr in the 80th minute. Just as it seemed the match was headed for a draw, Kapombe scored with a well-placed shot after a clever pass from Nado.
With this late goal, Tanzania ignited celebrations in the stadium while leaving Mauritania with little time to respond. This win moves Tanzania closer to the goal of qualifying for the knockout stage, while Mauritania must regroup quickly ahead of their next game.
Tanzania’s next challenge will be against Madagascar, while Mauritania prepares to face Burkina Faso. The stakes are high for both teams as the tournament continues.
