Nevada Faces Western Kentucky in Crucial Weekend Matchup

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Nevada football team (1-2) is set to clash with Western Kentucky (2-1) on Saturday, September 20, at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. Pacific Time.
This matchup marks the first meeting between the two teams. Nevada is looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Middle Tennessee, where they squandered a 13-0 lead late in the game. The Hilltoppers, coming off a bye week, are favored by 10.5 points.
One key to Nevada’s success will be to control the ground game. Western Kentucky has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 211 rushing yards per game. Nevada’s offense is expected to lean heavily on its running game, which could help keep the Hilltoppers’ powerful passing attack off the field.
Western Kentucky boasts one of the best passing offenses in the nation, featuring veteran quarterback Maverick McIvor. The Hilltoppers average 358 passing yards per game and have thrown for 11 touchdowns this season. Limiting explosives in the passing game will be crucial for Nevada’s defense, which has allowed 255.7 passing yards per game.
“We have to make sure we limit the big plays and tackle well in space,” said Nevada linebacker Thomas Witte. “That’s going to determine how we do against their passing game.”
Another important factor is the turnover battle. Under coach Jeff Choate, Nevada has only won the turnover battle three times in 16 games. This season, they are currently at a minus-five turnover margin.
“Winning the turnover battle will be key for us,” Witte added. “We need to create turnovers to give our offense more opportunities.”
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and available on 105.7 FM for radio listeners, with a pre-game show beginning at 3 p.m. Local fans and viewers across the nation will be able to catch all the action.
With both teams looking to solidify their seasons, the stakes are high. If Nevada can establish its running game and play mistake-free football, they may capitalize on this opportunity.
