Auburn AD Disappointed Over Missed Call in Loss to Oklahoma

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Auburn athletic director John Cohen expressed deep disappointment on Thursday regarding a controversial officiating call during the Tigers’ recent game against Oklahoma.
The missed call occurred in the second quarter when Oklahoma’s receiver appeared to feign a substitution before catching a 24-yard touchdown pass. The SEC later acknowledged that the officiating crew failed to interpret the move as a hideout tactic, which should have resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Oklahoma, thus negating the touchdown.
Cohen stated in his comments that the Tigers “deserved better” and emphasized the high level of preparation and effort put forth by players each week.
“Our young men prepare every week to compete at the highest level,” Cohen declared. “They deserve to have the game officiated at the highest level. A specifically emphasized rule was not properly officiated, impacting the game’s outcome.”
The SEC agreed that an error occurred but offered limited additional comments, citing that “appropriate accountability” measures would be in place.
This incident has stirred significant discussion among fans and analysts, further highlighting the challenges that come with officiating decisions in high-stakes college football games.
Cohen’s statement followed multiple conversations between him, Auburn University president Chris Roberts, and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey about the integrity of officiating.
As Auburn moves on, they will look to refocus and prepare for their upcoming games, aiming to overcome the disappointment of this past weekend.
