Detroit Broadcaster Ray Lane Passes Away at 95
Detroit, MI – Ray “Razor” Lane, a longstanding broadcaster in Detroit, died on Saturday due to complications from a fall at his home. He was 95 years old.
Deanne Lane, his daughter, confirmed the news in a statement. Lane had a broad career covering major sports teams in Detroit, including the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, and Detroit Red Wings. His broadcasting span included significant moments in Michigan sports history.
Lane earned the nickname “Razor” during his 16 years with the Red Wings, a title that stuck with him throughout his career, regardless of the sport he was covering. His influence in the broadcasting world extended beyond just entertainment; he was a respected figure, recognized for his contributions with an induction into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Ernie Harwell Lifetime Contribution Award.
Throughout his career, Lane had the honor of working alongside legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell on Detroit Tigers broadcasts for five years. This partnership was one of the highlights of his extensive career.
While he lost his wife Carolyn in 2004, Ray Lane is survived by three children, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. The Detroit sports community is mourning his loss, and condolences are pouring in for the Lane family and all those who knew him.
