Javier Báez Detroit Tigers 2025 Playoffs

BOSTON — The Detroit Tigers celebrated Saturday night after clinching their playoff berth with a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox. Shortstop Javier Báez, who has faced ups and downs in his career, was right in the middle of the celebration, exclaiming, “I’m going back to the playoffs!”

The moment marked a significant turnaround for a player who has been a focal point for both fans and critics throughout his four seasons in Detroit. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch remarked about Báez’s ability to thrive in high-pressure moments, saying, “He lives for these moments. He loves these environments that are a little bit rowdy.”

Báez had a notable performance during the game, contributing crucial plays that helped secure the victory. In his 74 games this season where the Tigers have won, he maintained a .295 batting average and an .810 OPS, compared to a .192 average in their losses.

During the game at Fenway Park, Báez showcased his talents with a remarkable diving catch, which Hinch later deemed the most important play of the game. His efforts not only demonstrated his defensive skill but were vital to keeping the Tigers’ postseason hopes alive.

This season has been a rollercoaster for the Tigers and especially for Báez. Despite significant struggles, including a batting average that dipped below .200 at times, his leadership and versatility have shone through. After hip surgery sidelined him last year during the playoffs, Báez expressed gratitude for being part of the team’s success this season. “It really means a lot to me,” he said.

Hinch had previously discussed a change in roles for Báez in spring training, emphasizing the need for adaptability within the team. Reflecting on his journey, Báez said, “If I stay healthy, I’ll do whatever, man. I can even catch, if you need me.” His willingness to switch positions has played a significant role in the team’s structure and success.

As the season progresses, the Tigers are poised to face the Cleveland Guardians in the playoffs, a team that overtook them in the standings. With a final record of 87-74, they have a chance to compete for the American League pennant. “If we get that click to play together and play good, there’s no chance to beat us,” Báez said optimistically, hinting at the team’s potential heading into the postseason.

The last month of the regular season has tested the Tigers, leading to 21 losses in 29 games. Despite the challenges, Báez remains hopeful, believing in the team’s ability to string together wins at the right moment to make a playoff run.
