Vancouver FC Faces Whitecaps in Historic Canadian Championship Final

Vancouver, Canada – The Vancouver Whitecaps are preparing for a highly anticipated final against crosstown rivals Vancouver FC in the TELUS Canadian Championship on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET at BC Place. As three-time defending champions, the Whitecaps are eyeing a chance to secure their fourth consecutive Voyageurs Cup title.
Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sørensen acknowledged the significance of the match for both teams. “It’s a big night for us, but it’s maybe even a bigger night for Vancouver FC,” he said. “I think it’s a great achievement they’ve reached the final.” Sørensen emphasized that both teams have much to gain from the match.
The Canadian Championship also offers the winner an automatic berth into the 2026 continental competition, adding another layer of importance for the Whitecaps. They are coming off a solid runner-up finish this year and aim to build on their experience from a previous final against LIGA MX’s Cruz Azul.
“We’ll go for it and not wait any seconds to try and be the better team in the game,” Sørensen added. “We have to be at our best.”
Injuries have challenged the Whitecaps all season, and Sørensen is uncertain about the starting lineup. Leading scorer Brian White exited a recent game with a hamstring issue, raising concerns about his participation. “I don’t have an update yet,” Sørensen said. “We have to figure out how bad it was.”
However, there is optimism surrounding captain Ryan Gauld‘s potential return after being sidelined with a knee injury. “There’s a possibility that he’ll be able to be in the rotation on Wednesday,” Sørensen noted.
Star player Thomas Müller is excited for the challenge ahead. A win would mark his 35th career title, making him the most decorated German player. “I’m not focusing on making history…I’m focused on having this winning feeling,” Müller said.
On the other hand, Vancouver FC is striving to create a historic moment of their own as they reach the championship final for the first time as a CPL team. Their journey has been remarkable, overcoming significant challenges in league play, including a victory over reigning CPL champions Cavalry FC.
“We’ve been underdogs the whole time,” said Vancouver FC defender Matteo Campagna, highlighting the team’s belief in their abilities against an established MLS opponent. With personal stakes for many players, including those with ties to the Whitecaps, the rivalry intensifies the pressure.
The Whitecaps will look to tap into their experience and home advantage, but Vancouver FC’s determination to claim their first Voyageurs Cup adds an unpredictable element to the match.
The excitement is palpable, with players aware that anything can happen in tournament football, especially in a derby showdown. “It localizes the derby even more,” goalkeeper Callum Irving stated. “It means a lot to be playing a big, important game against another team in the city.”
As the final approaches, both teams prepare to leave it all on the pitch. The Whitecaps hope to maintain their dominance, while Vancouver FC aims to make history in this thrilling encounter.
