Avalanche Face Challenges as NHL Season Approaches

DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Avalanche are gearing up for the upcoming NHL season amid significant uncertainty regarding star player health and team dynamics. Following the news of Aleksander Barkov‘s knee injury, which could sideline him for most or all of the season, the Avalanche’s odds of winning the Stanley Cup have slightly improved to 9.5-1.
Barkov, a top player for the defending champions Florida Panthers, requires surgery and adds to Colorado’s concerns about injuries within its own roster. The Panthers will also miss forward Matthew Tkachuk for the start of the season, creating a more competitive landscape for the Avalanche and other playoff contenders.
Coach Jared Bednar and the Avalanche management are exploring their options as they prepare for the 2025-26 season. The uncertainty arises as they assess the health of several key players, including Gabe Landeskog and Martin Necas. Landeskog, who is returning from knee surgery, is expected to contribute significantly if he stays healthy.
“Gabe’s return is crucial for us. He’s a key player on and off the ice,” said Bednar. However, the team is wary of the unpredictability surrounding his recovery since he will be the first NHL player to return from knee cartilage replacement surgery.
The recent acquisition of Victor Olofsson and the retaining of forward Kivi Kiviranta mark significant roster adjustments. Kiviranta had a breakout season last year but found himself without a contract until recently. “I’m grateful to be back and ready to prove myself again,” Kiviranta said.
Olofsson, who had success in previous seasons, acknowledged the challenges of free agency. “Waiting for a contract was tough, but I feel I fit in well here,” he stated.
As the Avalanche prepare for training camp, the addition of seasoned defenseman Brent Burns gives them an offensive edge. Burns will join the likes of Cale Makar and Josh Manson to create a formidable defense. However, with injuries to players like Mackenzie Blackwood, who is rehabbing, the Avalanche need to solidify their goalkeeping if they hope to make a successful playoff run.
The team is actively working to build its roster depth, understanding the tightrope that there might not be enough standing players when the regular season kicks off.
Overall, the Avalanche’s path to the Stanley Cup is fraught with obstacles, but with the right adjustments and a bit of luck, they are committed to overcoming these challenges and competing at the highest level.
