EL SEGUNDO, CA – SEPTEMBER 29: The Los Angeles Lakers filled their last two-way contract spot by signing guard Nick Smith Jr. just before the start of training camp. The announcement came on Monday, just a few days after Smith was waived by the Charlotte Hornets.

During his two seasons with the Hornets, Smith, who was the 27th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, played in 111 games and averaged 8.0 points per game, with a shooting percentage of 36.9% from beyond the arc. Despite a promising start, the 21-year-old faced challenges making an impact as the Hornets struggled, finishing last season with a record of 19-63.

Reflecting on his transition to the Lakers, Smith noted the stark contrast in atmosphere. “It’s been crazy. Especially when I stepped into the facility on Media Day and there were hundreds of people here compared to about 20 in Charlotte,” he said. Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunity and excitement to learn from established players in Los Angeles.

Having worked out with the Lakers prior to the draft, Smith feels a connection to the team. He shared, “I was just trying to get my foot in the door… just thankful for the opportunity to get better and learn from the best.”

Smith aims to improve his shooting skills and defensive play during his time with the Lakers. He believes keeping the game simple will benefit his growth. “I’d say just my shooting ability, just to be able to help the team put the ball in the basket,” he said. “I also need to be a better defender as well.”

Addressing his abrupt departure from the Hornets, Smith acknowledged that not every situation works out as planned. “Sometimes things are just not gonna work out where you’re at, and I understand that. Of course, I’m trying to catch up just because guys have been here since the summer,” he explained.

With Smith joining the Lakers, the franchise also waived center Kylor Kelley, ensuring they utilized all three available two-way contract slots. Smith’s addition comes with hopes that he can carve out a significant role in the team’s plans moving forward.
