Deshaun Watson Cleveland Browns Injury Update

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns sit at 1-3 this season as questions swirl around their quarterback position ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in London. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco has struggled significantly, throwing six interceptions, which is among the highest in the NFL.

With Flacco’s performance in question, discussions have arisen about the potential for rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders to step in. Both players have been considered alternatives as the Browns navigate their current quarterback challenges.

Key to the quarterback conversation is former Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson, who is still recovering from multiple surgeries on a torn Achilles injury sustained in Week 7 of the 2024 season. Although he hasn’t returned to practice yet, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed optimism about Watson’s rehab progress, stating, “Deshaun’s doing a great job with his rehab, and that’s really where his focus is.”

Watson is currently on the reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list and is eligible to open his 21-day practice window soon. However, he may not be ready to play until mid-October, according to Stefanski.

General manager Andrew Berry acknowledged the challenges having Watson on the roster poses, noting, “The trade hasn’t gone as we had hoped or anticipated.” Watson, who initially began his NFL career with the Houston Texans, signed a five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns in 2022.

During his tenure in Cleveland, Watson has only started 19 games due to injuries and inconsistent performances, compiling a 9-10 record with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The organization has explored options for quarterback depth while waiting for Watson to return.

Despite setbacks, Watson has been actively working on his recovery and provided updates via social media, showing himself participating in drills with his personal coach, Quincy Avery. He recently stated, “I believe in myself… I know, I’m gonna be way better than before.”

While Watson’s eventual return is uncertain, his continued presence around the facility offers encouragement for fans and teammates alike. The Browns currently have four quarterbacks, including Flacco, Gabriel, and Sanders, complicating the decision-making process as they anticipate Watson’s status moving forward.

The team’s next steps will be crucial, particularly if Watson is cleared to return as his contract prevents the Browns from easily releasing him without financial consequences.
