Trent Grisham Struggles as Yankees Face Playoff Elimination

NEW YORK, NY — Trent Grisham is struggling at the plate as the New York Yankees face a critical Game 3 in the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Boston Red Sox. With the Yankees looking to avoid elimination, Grisham has not performed as expected, going just 3-for-20 with eight strikeouts in the 2025 playoffs.
Grisham’s performance has been a concern for the Yankees, who have faced challenges throughout the postseason. Yankees manager Aaron Boone defended Grisham on Monday, saying the struggles can happen in the playoffs. “I trust Trent Grisham and his at-bat quality,” Boone stated, highlighting the tough pitching matchups Grisham has faced.
In his career, Grisham has hit .165 with a .577 OPS in 24 postseason games. Despite his current struggles, memories of success linger from his previous playoff appearances. Two years ago, he hit .500 during the wild-card series against the Mets, hitting three home runs. However, he has since gone cold, with a dismal 3-for-39 (.077) showing and 17 strikeouts in his last 10 postseason games.
This season, Grisham has excelled in many areas, setting personal bests in home runs, RBIs, and walks. A key contributor during the regular season, he delivered several clutch moments for the Yankees, including a grand slam against the Astros.
Following a disappointing showing in Game 1, where he struck out four times, Grisham had a rough Game 2, again going down on strikes three times. Boone expressed confidence in him, showing unwavering belief in Grisham’s ability to deliver. “He’s going to throw a good at-bat on you,” Boone added.
As the Yankees contend with the pressure of a win-or-go-home game, Grisham’s ability to perform will be crucial. General manager Brian Cashman is watching closely, especially since Grisham is a looming free agent.
Boone remains optimistic. “He’s going to not get overwhelmed by a situation,” he said. The Yankees’ season hangs in the balance, and fans hope Grisham can turn it around.
