RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Charles Oliveira is ready to compete in the main event of UFC Rio on October 11, despite a quick turnaround after a devastating loss. The former UFC lightweight champion was knocked out by Ilia Topuria on June 28 while attempting to reclaim his title. Now, six weeks later, he is set to fight Mateusz Gamrot at the Farmasi Arena after Rafael Fiziev withdrew due to injury.

Oliveira expressed confidence about his physical and mental readiness. “I went back to sparring and I’m training normal,” he told MMA Fighting. “I don’t feel any headache, I’m just training at Chute Boxe the same way I trained for the last fights.” He mentioned feeling positive and excited about returning to the octagon, particularly in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro.

Quando asked about criticism towards his quick return, Oliveira revealed he actively sought this fight. “I wanted to fight in Rio. In front of my flag, in front of my crowd,” he stated, emphasizing the emotional importance of performing in his home country.

Initially, Oliveira was set to face Fiziev but had to adjust after the latter suffered a knee injury. Oliveira didn’t let that deter him from wanting to compete. “I wanted to fight soon,” he said, eventually leading to Gamrot stepping up to fill the void.

Oliveira’s history in Brazil has been strong; he has never lost in his home country as a UFC fighter. He is also aware that fighting in front of a sold-out crowd adds a different level of motivation. Around 15,000 fans are expected to attend the event, making it a significant occasion for him.

Reflecting on the emotional aspects of his upcoming fight, Oliveira shared how meaningful it is to have his parents in attendance. “They only watch my walkout and then get on their knee, no matter where, and pray to God,” he noted, emphasizing his family’s role in his career.

The stakes are high as Oliveira looks to bounce back from his recent loss and solidify his place in the lightweight division. He believes victory against Gamrot could lead him back into title contention. Oliveira feels grateful for the opportunity to fight at home and remains focused on the match ahead.
