Nate Pearson Signs One-Year Deal with Houston Astros
HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros have signed right-handed pitcher Nate Pearson to a one-year contract worth $1.35 million, a source confirmed to ESPN on Friday. Pearson, who is 29, will likely transition to a starting role after spending most of his time in the majors as a reliever.
Pearson’s performance last season saw him make 11 appearances with the Chicago Cubs, where he struggled, allowing 15 runs over 14.2 innings with a 9.20 ERA. However, he found more success at Triple-A Iowa, where he posted a 2.22 ERA in 38 games, striking out 57 batters in 44.2 innings.
Originally drafted 28th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017, Pearson was once considered a top prospect. He made his MLB debut in 2020, but injuries and inconsistencies hindered his performance, leading to his release after a full season with the Cubs. He was traded to Chicago in 2024 in exchange for minor-league players Yohendrick Pinango and Josh Rivera.
Despite his ups and downs, the Astros seem willing to give him another chance to establish himself at the major league level. The Athletic was the first to report Pearson’s signing.
Houston’s management is making aggressive changes following their postseason absence, and Pearson’s signing is part of this effort to revitalize the team. As he prepares for the upcoming season, both the team and fans eagerly await to see if he can harness his previously untapped potential.
