Diamondbacks Trade Suárez to Mariners, Open Door for Alexander

Phoenix, Arizona – The Arizona Diamondbacks traded All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez to the Seattle Mariners at the 2025 Deadline, but the deal may not benefit either team significantly at this stage.
In exchange for Suárez, Arizona received first base prospect Tyler Locklear, right-handed reliever Juan Burgos, and right-handed starter Hunter Cranton. Both teams are still evaluating the long-term impact of this trade.
Suárez played a vital role for Arizona prior to the trade, boasting a .248 batting average with 36 home runs and 87 RBI during the season. He also achieved a rare four-homer game. However, following his return to Seattle, Suárez’s performance faltered. He hit a mere .189 with a .883 OPS, contributing 13 home runs over 53 games.
As the playoffs unfolded, Suárez struggled further, achieving only a .152 batting average and a .273 slugging percentage.
Arizona’s return has also faced challenges. Locklear managed just a .175 average with three home runs before suffering season-ending injuries to his elbow and shoulder. Burgos struggled on the mound with an 8.10 ERA, while Cranton was sidelined before making his debut for the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles.
Despite the subpar performances of the incoming players, the departure of Suárez paved the way for utilityman Blaze Alexander to take over full-time duties at third base for Arizona. Alexander showcased significant defensive improvements, avoiding the errors that plagued his earlier season.
With a .706 OPS, Alexander’s versatility and positive impact have been crucial for a Diamondbacks team seeking a spark after the trade.
“The opportunity arose for me to step up, and I’m glad I could contribute,” Alexander said.
This trade demonstrated how the dynamics of a team can shift, with unexpected opportunities arising from player departures.
As the 2025 season evolves, both teams will keep an eye on the players involved and their future contributions.
