Pressure Mounts on Auburn’s Hugh Freeze After Third Straight Loss
**AUBURN, Ala.** — Hugh Freeze is under significant pressure following the Auburn Tigers’ 20-10 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night, marking his third consecutive defeat this season. This loss continues a troubling trend, leaving Freeze with a 14-17 overall record at Auburn and 11 losses in 12 games against nationally-ranked opponents.
After the game, Freeze acknowledged his team’s struggles. “It’s very clear we find ways to not win football games. And that’s what has to change,” he said, reflecting on the inability to hold a 10-point lead against the Bulldogs.
In an SEC teleconference earlier this week, Freeze was asked about his job security amid rumors regarding the Georgia game. He deflected, stating, “I don’t pay attention to any of that. Of course, I’m a person of faith, and I know that my story is being written way above my pay grade.” His focus remains on helping the team improve.
The loss followed a promising 3-0 start for Auburn, where the team initially led the 11th-ranked opponent but faltered in the fourth quarter, and then faced a tough defeat against another top-ranked team, ninth-ranked Oklahoma. In the game against Georgia, Auburn controlled the first half but struggled offensively, failing to score in the second half.
Freeze’s challenges are compounded by his buyout clause, which stands at $13.8 million should he be let go after the 2025 season. This buyout, while significant, is seen as manageable compared to previous coaching buyouts the school has faced.
Despite the pressure, Freeze remains committed to his role. He emphasized the need to stay focused on improvement and accountability. “Easy. Show up to work Monday and get ready to win a football game. That’s how it looks,” he said, highlighting his approach moving forward.
