DETROIT, Michigan — The Detroit Free Press Marathon returns this weekend, drawing over 26,000 runners. Scheduled for October 17-19, the marathon includes races that cross the border into Canada.

Runners will navigate the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor and back through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, despite expected rainy weather. Sunday’s events—Marathon, International Half, Motor City Half, and Marathon Relay—are sold out, indicating higher demand this year.

The weekend’s activities kick off with the Health and Fitness Expo at Huntington Place, running from 1-7 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The expo will showcase marathon merchandise and vendors, offering items like running shoes and nutrition products.

Other highlights include a warm-up party at Chalet 313 on Friday night and a Blessing of the Sneakers service on Saturday at Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit Church.

Race participants should be prepared for inclement weather. Forecasters predict showers, possible thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Meteorologist Alex Mannion from the National Weather Service warned, “It’s not really looking to be a pleasant Sunday at all.”

Road closures will begin at 4 a.m. on Sunday, with major routes impacted. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will close from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to accommodate race logistics. Participants are encouraged to book parking in advance via SpotHero and allow extra time for travel.

Those participating in the international races must pick up their race packets in person at the expo and bring valid travel documents. Live tracking for runners will be available on the Detroit Free Press Marathon app.

Awards will be given during an on-stage ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday at Campus Martius, part of the Conquered after party featuring food trucks and live music.
