Brandon Aiyuk on Recovery Path After Injury Setback
San Francisco, CA – Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is making progress on his recovery from the torn ACL and MCL he suffered last season. As the San Francisco 49ers approach the midpoint of the 2025 NFL season, Aiyuk remains on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.
General Manager John Lynch provided an optimistic update on Aiyuk’s condition during an interview on KNBR. “He’s getting closer. And I can see that each week. He’s better today than he was last week at this time. That’s all positive. That’s the update,” Lynch said.
Aiyuk’s injury occurred in Week 8 of the previous season during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Lynch noted that while Aiyuk was originally expected back around Week 7 of this season, a setback has pushed back his timeline. However, a return by Week 8 or 9 is now possible.
In Aiyuk’s absence, the 49ers have struggled with injuries to several key players. Quarterback Brock Purdy has only played in two games this season. Star tight end George Kittle has been on injured reserve since Week 1. Aiyuk’s return would give the offense a significant boost, as they have struggled to find consistent receiving threats. Running back Christian McCaffrey currently leads the team in receptions, with double the amount of catches compared to the next closest receiver.
The 49ers sit at 4-2 heading into a critical matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football, a game that could help them regain momentum. Injuries have been a recurring challenge for the team, but Lynch remains hopeful about Aiyuk’s return.
