Kristen Bell Reflects on ‘Nobody Wants This’ Creative Journey
LOS ANGELES, CA — Kristen Bell shared her journey while filming the Netflix series ‘Nobody Wants This,’ highlighting early creative tensions with creator Erin Foster.
In an interview published on October 22, Bell discussed the initial disagreements she had regarding her character Joanne, an agnostic sex-and-relationship podcaster. She admitted to questioning the emotional depth of her role, feeling disconnected from it at first. ‘I pushed back with constant questioning,’ said Bell. ‘Now I see how much ambiguity there is in real life, and I see what Erin was doing.’
Bell, who also produces the series, confirmed that it was only after the first season’s success that she grasped the show’s relatable themes. ‘Once I saw the show… proof is in the pudding, I was like, ‘Oh wow, this girl is writing about what happens to your neighbor or your girlfriend,’’ she explained.
Foster’s pilot script, inspired by her own love story, was initially rejected by multiple studios. ‘This feels too small,’ she recounted the feedback she received. However, Netflix embraced the concept, allowing her to fully realize her vision.
The upcoming second season of ‘Nobody Wants This’ is set to premiere on Netflix on October 23. The series showcases the complex relationship between Joanne and Noah, a progressive rabbi played by Adam Brody, mirroring Foster’s own real-life romance, which began in a gym in Los Angeles in 2018.
In a unique twist, Foster noted, ‘This show is based on the only good decision I ever made: falling for a nice Jewish boy.’ She admitted that her relationship’s complexities have shaped the show substantially.
Bell also emphasized the importance of strong female voices in television. ‘I believe Erin Foster will become a reference point in TV and film meetings going forward,’ she remarked. ‘It’s Erin Foster-esque.’
The popularity of ‘Nobody Wants This’ confirms viewers’ desire for authentic stories about love and relationships, resonating with audiences across various backgrounds.
