UConn Women’s Basketball Opens Season Against Louisville in Classic Showdown
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The top-ranked University of Connecticut women’s basketball team faces No. 20 Louisville in the Armed Forces Classic on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall, Naval Academy. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN and the UConn Sports Network.
This Armed Forces Classic marks a significant first, as it is the inaugural season featuring women’s basketball programs. The event aims to bring premier college basketball games to U.S. troops stationed around the globe.
UConn enters this season fresh off a historic 2025 campaign where they claimed their record 12th NCAA Championship, defeating South Carolina 82-59. The Huskies are a formidable team in season openers, boasting a 43-8 all-time record and a 29-game winning streak in such matches.
UConn’s head coach Geno Auriemma, beginning his 41st season, noted the team’s resilience despite losing standout Paige Bueckers to the WNBA. The roster features returning stars like Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong, along with new faces from the transfer portal.
Louisville, under head coach Jeff Walz, looks to make a statement this season after finishing the last one with a 22-11 record. They lost in the NCAA Tournament’s second round to TCU but have incoming talent including Tajianna Roberts and Laura Ziegler, both recognized on the Preseason All-ACC team.
The matchup is critical for both teams as Louisville poses a serious challenge. Auriemma expects a tough test against younger players who have gained experience since last year’s competition. The two teams previously met in December, where UConn emerged victorious 85-52.
Fans can catch the game on ESPN, as tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. With UConn’s depth and experience, they aim to start the season strong. Their next game is set for Sunday against Florida State, where they will unveil their latest national championship banner.
