Ariana Grande Cynthia Erivo Wicked Performance

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Fans got a rare behind-the-scenes look at the magic of “Wicked: One Wonderful Night” during a taping at the Dolby Theatre on September 24, 2025. The show highlighted both the musical’s iconic performances and the fun interactions that occurred out of the audience’s sight.

Before the cameras started rolling, the audience—their faces painted green—learned choreography for the opening number, “No One Mourns the Wicked.” Those in the orchestra section were given faux tulips to toss into the air as Ariana Grande, playing Glinda, made her entrance. After a thorough rehearsal, cameras captured the magic of the performance, but some scenes were filmed twice for perfection.

Director Jon M. Chu filmed multiple introductions for segments, including audition tapes featuring celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian and Shaquille O’Neal. Though only one made it to the final cut, the night was filled with exciting exclusives, including a cover of the classic duet “Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy” by Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who was performing as Elphaba.

Throughout the night, the camaraderie between Grande and Erivo shone through. They teased new songs from the upcoming movie “Wicked: For Good,” but when asked for a preview, Grande noted, “We’re sorry, you won’t actually hear them tonight!”

Hidden gems from the night included a surprise performance with a young boy named Remington, who was dressed as Elphaba. Grande invited him on stage, transforming the number “Popular” into a delightful duet. Meanwhile, choreographer Christopher Scott reflected on the joy of involving a young talent in the performance.

The evening offered heartwarming moments, including a reunion of original cast members Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who joined Grande and Erivo for a moving rendition of “For Good.” Fans cheered as Grande and Erivo emphasized the themes of resilience and acceptance that defined “Wicked.”

As the taping stretched over four hours, the cast kept the live audience entertained with music and dance. Moments of levity included a mini celebration from the audience as the cast conveyed their gratitude. At one point, audience emcee Bill Sindelar invited fans in colorful costumes to engage with the cast, enhancing the lively atmosphere.

With hints of surprises and guest appearances, the night offered laughter, music, and a sense of unity, building excitement for the upcoming release of “Wicked: For Good” on November 21.
