Eric Dane Uses Screen Role to Raise ALS Awareness
NEW YORK, USA – Actor Eric Dane, 53, is set to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in an upcoming episode of NBC’s series “Brilliant Minds,” airing on November 24. Dane guest stars as Matthew, a courageous firefighter who grapples with revealing his ALS diagnosis to his family.
Dane’s real-life struggle with ALS intertwines with his character’s story, as he announced his diagnosis publicly in April. ALS is a degenerative condition that leads to muscle weakness, affecting the ability to move, speak, and breathe.
Though the episode has yet to air, its sensitive portrayal is already making waves. “It’s always important to see the experience of living with ALS reflected in popular culture,” said Larry Falivena, board chair of I AM ALS and an ALS patient himself. He believes such portrayals can elevate awareness and spark compassion.
Dane’s character grapples with his diagnosis while maintaining his responsibilities as a firefighter. The episode aims to shed light on the emotional strains that accompany such a diagnosis for both the sufferers and their loved ones. Accompanying him in the episode are Mädchen Amick as Alicia, Matthew’s ex-wife, and Chloe Avakian as their daughter, Gabby.
The episode will end with a graphic directing viewers to ALS resources, a step advocated by Dane himself. This effort aims to encourage investment in research and support for those living with ALS.
“For over a century, ALS has been incurable, and we’re done accepting the status quo,” said Dane during a recent campaign launch with I AM ALS. “That’s why I’ve partnered with I AM ALS and their Push for Progress.”
By engaging in such powerful narratives about ALS, Dane hopes to inspire more urgency in finding a cure and changing perceptions of the disease.
