Cam Akers Cut from Vikings Practice Squad, Signs with Seahawks
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings cut running back Cam Akers from their practice squad on Saturday, a decision that comes as Akers struggled to find a significant role this season. Akers, 26, appeared in three games for the Vikings this year, serving as depth behind running backs Jordan Mason and Zavier Scott, while Aaron Jones remained on injured reserve.
During his limited time on the field, Akers rushed five times for 19 yards, but he showcased his versatility by completing a 32-yard pass on a trick play. Following his release, cornerback Dwight McGlothern was signed to replace Akers on the practice squad.
“We appreciate Cam’s contributions during his time with us,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said. “He’s a talented player but we had to make adjustments as we approach the final weeks of the season.”
Akers returned to the practice squad briefly after being cut but struggled for playing time, logging just one offensive snap in a recent game against the Cleveland Browns. He impressed by throwing a 32-yard pass to tight end Josh Oliver on that lone snap, proving his capability as a former high school quarterback.
In a quick turnaround, Akers signed with the Seattle Seahawks shortly after his Vikings release, as the team needed support in their backfield amid injuries to their current players. The Seahawks are currently in the thick of a playoff push and they view Akers as a valuable addition.
“We’re excited to bring Cam on board,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said in a statement. “He has the experience and knows how to compete in our division.”
Akers had initially joined Minnesota after a trade with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. His time with the Rams included an impressive rookie season but was marred by injuries, including a torn Achilles that resulted in significant time away from the field.
As he joins the Seahawks, Akers aims to find a new rhythm and make a mark towards the end of the season, especially with the possibility of facing his old team, the Rams, again in Week 16.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to compete and contribute,” Akers said. “I’m ready to prove my worth and help the Seahawks as we aim for the playoffs.”
