LINCOLN, NebraskaEmmett Johnson, a standout running back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, is making waves on the college football scene as he leads his team in yardage and helps keep hopes alive for a successful season after key injuries.

Before a recent goal-line play, Johnson rallied his offensive linemen, encouraging them to join him in the end zone if he scored. “Let’s hit it in the end zone,” he told them, referencing the famous Heisman pose. Despite not currently ranking high in Heisman discussions, Johnson, the former three-star prospect, is aiming for recognition after surging in performance this season.

Johnson has accounted for 37.9% of Nebraska’s total yardage, leading the Big Ten in rushing with 1,234 yards, a remarkable average of 112.2 yards per game. His coach, Matt Rhule, expressed strong support for Johnson’s Heisman candidacy after a breakout performance, saying, “What he’s doing is fantastic. I hope people appreciate seeing him.”

Despite Nebraska’s (7-4) overall struggles this season, including the injury to star quarterback Dylan Raiola, Johnson’s consistent performance has not gone unnoticed. UCLA‘s interim head coach, Tim Skipper, highlighted Johnson as a crucial player during their matchup, stating, “I think he is a very special talent. Nationally, they should be talking about him a lot more.”

Growing up in Minnesota, Johnson developed a competitive nature that has driven his success. In high school, during preparations for a major game, he boldly declared to his brother that he was aiming to score ten touchdowns. He ended up with six, showcasing his talent and determination on the field.

His mother, Precious Johnson, recalled his fearless spirit, describing him as a tough kid who often took on challenges with enthusiasm. Precious and her husband, Charles Sr., fled Liberia during a civil war in the early 1990s. Their journey to safety influences their family’s values and has shaped Emmett’s perspective on life.

“I wanna be able to retire my mom from work and tell her she never has to work again,” Johnson said, reflecting on his family’s struggles. He has grown to be a leader on his team, becoming integral to Nebraska’s offense this year.

After briefly entering the transfer portal last December, Johnson resolved to commit to Nebraska and has since thrived. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen has praised Johnson for his evolving game, recognizing his ability to handle a heavier workload. “The kid just gets stronger every quarter and every series,” Holgorsen noted.

This season, Johnson has made history as the first Husker to achieve four consecutive 100-yard games since 2013. As he prepares for the season finale, Johnson remains focused on proving his value on the field, despite previous setbacks and feelings of being overlooked.

“I just use it as fuel every day in practice,” Johnson stated about his motivation. He firmly believes that he should be considered a finalist for the Heisman Trophy this year, indicating that his future prospects could heavily influence Nebraska’s standing in the Big Ten moving forward.
