Aamir Khan Opens Up About Alcohol Struggles After Divorce

Mumbai, India — Aamir Khan, the acclaimed actor and filmmaker, revealed his struggles with alcohol and depression following his divorce from Reena Dutta during a candid interview with Instant Bollywood. The conversation shed light on the toll the separation took on Khan emotionally and professionally.

The 60-year-old actor disclosed that after his marriage to Dutta ended in 2002, he confronted a painful period in his life, which lasted nearly two to three years. “After the split, I was in mourning for almost 2-3 years. I wasn’t working or listening to scripts,” Khan said. “I was alone at home, and for almost 1.5 years, I drank a lot.”

Khan, historically known as a teetotaler, explained how he fell into heavy drinking, eventually consuming an entire bottle of alcohol daily. “You will be shocked to know that I was a teetotaler. After the split, I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t sleep at night, and I started drinking. Main Devdas tha! (I was like Devdas),” said Khan, drawing a parallel to the character from the famous novel who struggles with alcoholism and self-destruction.

After a prolonged battle with deep depression, Khan confirmed earlier this year that he has given up alcohol, emphasizing the importance of acceptance in moving forward. He stated, “Accept that what was once yours is not there now. Also accept how good it was for you when it was there, and how much you will miss it when it isn’t there anymore.”

Regarding his personal life, Khan first married Reena Dutta in 1986. The couple shares two children, Junaid and Ira Khan, but eventually parted ways in 2002. Following this, he married Kiran Rao in 2005, but they also separated after 16 years of marriage in 2021. They have a son, Azad, through surrogacy.

On his recent 60th birthday, Khan introduced his partner Gauri Spratt at a celebration, noting he feels “settled” with her. When asked about the possibility of another marriage, Khan hinted that he is hesitant, acknowledging that his age might not align with such commitments.
