Aaron Pierre Cast as John Stewart in “Lanterns” Series on HBO
Aaron Pierre, best known for his lead role in Netflix‘s “Rebel Ridge,” has been cast as John Stewart, the iconic Green Lantern, for an upcoming series on HBO. This casting decision concludes an extensive search for the right actor to portray the beloved character, one of DC Comics‘ first Black superheroes.
The series, developed by DC Studios’ heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, will be the first major television endeavor under their leadership. The role of John Stewart carries significant cultural importance, having been a fan-favorite since his introduction in 1971 by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams in “Green Lantern” No. 87.
Pierre was chosen over Stephan James, who was also a strong contender. James is currently garnering attention for his performance in “The Piano Lesson.” Both actors underwent screen tests last week, which led to Pierre’s selection on Tuesday.
“Lanterns” promises a gritty narrative inspired by “True Detective,” focusing on two Green Lanterns. Pierre’s character, John Stewart, will be mentored by the legendary Hal Jordan, played by veteran actor Kyle Chandler, as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
James Hawes, known for directing episodes of the spy series “Slow Horses,” is set to direct the first episodes of this high-profile series. The creative team includes notable names such as Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and comic book writer Tom King, who will serve as executive producers and writers. Mundy will also act as the showrunner for the planned eight-episode season.
Aaron Pierre has been gaining prominence after his performance in “Rebel Ridge,” which topped Netflix’s global charts for three consecutive weeks. He has a notable presence in the comic book realm, having been previously cast in a now-altered version of Marvel’s “Blade.” His other prominent roles include appearances in “Old,” “The Underground Railroad,” and “Genius: MLK/X,” where he portrayed Malcolm X. Pierre is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, and other agencies.
