SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Actor Christopher McDonald, famously known for his role as Shooter McGavin in the 1996 comedy film “Happy Gilmore,” recreated his iconic gold jacket scene during the WM Phoenix Open on Saturday. The recreation took place as fans rushed to the 16th hole, mirroring the chaotic chase from the original movie.

In the film, McGavin steals Happy Gilmore’s (played by Adam Sandler) gold jacket after losing the Tour Championship, sparking a wild pursuit by angry fans. On Saturday, McDonald brought the character back to life, donning the signature jacket and drawing cheers from the crowd. Videos of the moment quickly circulated on social media, with fans expressing nostalgia and excitement for the upcoming sequel “Happy Gilmore 2,” set to release on Netflix later this year.

“This was a fantastic way to engage with fans and build anticipation for the movie,” said Troy Lynch, who captured and shared the moment on his X account. “Seeing Shooter McGavin back in action brought so much energy to the event.”

The WM Phoenix Open, known for its lively atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for the promotion. The tournament organizers capitalized on the film’s cult following, blending golf with pop culture seamlessly. “It’s exactly what we want to see: fans creating those viral moments with respect and enthusiasm,” said Matt Mooney, Tournament Chairman.

The sequel, currently in production, promises to reunite original cast members, including Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller. New additions to the cast include notable figures like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and even Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Filming wrapped in December, with the first look featuring Happy Gilmore preparing for a senior tour stint.

As the golf community awaits the film’s release, the WM Phoenix Open continues to showcase its ability to blend tradition with modern entertainment, ensuring its legacy as one of golf’s most unique events remains intact.
