Actor Joshua Jackson Reflects on Mighty Ducks Lessons from Estevez

LOS ANGELES, CA – In a recent episode of a popular podcast, actor Joshua Jackson revisited his childhood experience filming the “Mighty Ducks” franchise and the valuable lessons learned from co-star Emilio Estevez. Jackson, 46, reflected on filming the movies during a candid interview on March 11, where guest-host Taraji P. Henson prompted him to share insights from his early career.
Jackson portrayed Charlie Conway in the beloved series starting with the original “Mighty Ducks” film released in 1992. Estevez, 62, played Gordon Bombay, a character compelled to coach a youth hockey team as part of a community service sentence.
Recalling a pivotal moment while shooting the second installment, “D2: Mighty Ducks” (1994), Jackson shared a memory of filming a climactic game scene before an enthusiastic crowd of approximately 20,000 fans. “As I was coming off the ice, I just blew past a group of fans waiting for autographs to head to the locker room,” Jackson said. Estevez swiftly intervened, reminding him, “Don’t ever do that again. Why do you think you get to go out there and skate in front of all of these people? This is who keeps you employed. Do not ever forget who it is that you’re here for.”
Jackson noted how Estevez’s advice offered him a significant perspective shift during that formative time in his life. “It was a really important reframing for my 15-year-old self to remember who you are and what’s important,” Jackson explained, acknowledging the depth of Estevez’s words.
Taraji P. Henson, who hosted the podcast, praised Estevez’s insight, calling it “brilliant” and drawing parallels to lessons her own mother imparted about valuing personal connections. Jackson’s ability to absorb this message showcases commendable character, Henson added.
The “Mighty Ducks” franchise not only featured Jackson and Estevez but also starred actors such as Marguerite Moreau, Elden Henson, and Jussie Smollett. Estevez notably reprised his role as Gordon Bombay in the recent Disney+ series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” which debuted in 2021.
Jackson’s career evolved significantly after the “Mighty Ducks” films. He gained prominence for his role as Pacey Witter on the TV series “Dawson's Creek,” which aired from 1998 to 2003. Currently, he stars in ABC’s drama “Doctor Odyssey” as Dr. Max Bankman. “It’s the first time in a very long time that I’m playing a pretty uncomplicated guy,” Jackson shared, describing his character as someone navigating both personal and professional challenges in a lighthearted, engaging story.
“Doctor Odyssey” premiered in early 2025 and airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC and is available for streaming on Hulu the following day. Jackson expressed excitement about portraying a character without heavy dramatic baggage, focusing on fun and engaging storytelling.
