Actor Thomas Haden Church Talks Texas Roots and New Role in Tires

WOODLAND HILLS, California — Actor Thomas Haden Church is back in the spotlight as Phil in the upcoming second season of the comedy series ‘Tires.’ Church, known for his role as airplane mechanic Lowell Mather on the 1990s sitcom ‘Wings,’ expresses excitement about this new character and the opportunity to work alongside Shane Gillis.
Church’s connection to the series began with an outreach from executive Brandon James at Rough House Pictures. After initially discussing another project, James extended the invitation to join ‘Tires.’ Church said he had no initial knowledge of the show but found the scripts and chemistry enticing. ‘I thought Shane was hilarious. I really liked it,’ Church explained.
In ‘Tires,’ Church’s character Phil is portrayed as a wealthy businessman. When asked about Phil’s financial status, he stated, ‘He’s got the kind of money where he can just show up and be like, “I want to open half-a-dozen mattress stores.”’ This portrayal continues Church’s trend of playing distinct characters that resonate with audiences.
Church also discussed his life in Texas, where he runs a cattle ranch. ‘It’s home,’ he remarked, noting that he has been a cattle rancher for 26 years. This rustic lifestyle is a contrast to his Hollywood work, providing a fulfilling balance. ‘Every time I’m back there, I just feel relaxed,’ he shared.
Reflecting on his acting trajectory, Church highlighted his breakthrough role in the film ‘Tombstone,’ which came after the success of shows like ‘Wings’ and ‘Northern Exposure.’ He credits this success to a shift in casting practices that allowed actors from television to transition to film roles.
As preparations for season two of ‘Tires’ gear up, Church looks forward to collaborating closely with the show’s creative team. ‘We all want to do it with you. Not for you, with you,’ he emphasized the importance of collaboration in the production process.
The premiere of ‘Tires’ season two is highly anticipated, further solidifying Church’s multifaceted career in both television and film.
