June Lockhart Actress 1950s

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — June Lockhart, the beloved actress best known for her roles in classic films and television series, died of natural causes on Oct. 23 at her home. She was 100 years old.

Lockhart gained fame as Timmy‘s foster mother, Ruth Martin, in the CBS series “Lassie” from 1958 to 1964. The show followed the adventures of Timmy, played by Jon Provost, and his dog, Lassie. Her gentle demeanor captured the hearts of viewers. “My own mother might forget my birthday, but June never does,” Provost recalled in 1994.

Following “Lassie,” Lockhart starred as Dr. Maureen Robinson in the classic sci-fi series “Lost in Space,” from 1965 to 1968. She played a brilliant biochemist navigating the challenges of space alongside her family. In a 2024 interview, Lockhart shared that “Lost in Space” was her favorite project, noting she loved her “space family.”

Born June Cloyce Lockhart on June 25, 1925, in New York City, she had acting in her genes; both parents, Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, were actors. Lockhart made her film debut at 13 in the 1938 version of “A Christmas Carol,” playing Belinda Cratchit alongside her parents.

Her film career included notable roles in “Meet Me in St. Louis,” “Sergeant York,” and “She-Wolf of London.” She enjoyed a successful television career, appearing in shows such as “Petticoat Junction,” “General Hospital,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” Lockhart was nominated for two Emmy Awards and received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Lockhart was also a passionate space enthusiast. In 2014, NASA awarded her the Exceptional Public Achievement Medal for her work promoting the agency. “I’ve been to two space shuttle launches,” she said, expressing pride in the recognition. Her family described her as more than an actress, highlighting her love for journalism, politics, and science.

A private service is planned, and her family requests donations to a charity in lieu of flowers. Lockhart is remembered not only for her iconic roles but also for her kind spirit and the impact she made in the world.
