Adam Driver Reflects on Watching Star Wars and His Career

LOS ANGELES, CA — Adam Driver, known for his versatile roles in films like “Marriage Story” and the “Star Wars” series, recently opened up about his decision to avoid watching his own performances. Despite his compelling portrayals that resonate with audiences, he initially vowed not to see his films until watching with co-stars Carrie Fisher and Daisy Ridley.
Driver explained his reasoning during a conversation on Howard Stern’s show. He shared, “I feel like I would be my own critic, constantly seeing all of the flaws in my performance that I wish I could change.” This self-critique has led many actors, including Driver, to avoid their own work.
His role as Kylo Ren in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy has been particularly impactful. Driver portrayed the character as a conflicted antagonist, showcasing vulnerability beneath his anger. He concluded that seeing himself as Kylo Ren in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was a special experience due to the company he shared during the viewing.
Reflecting on this unique experience, Driver admitted that even with a notable film like “The Force Awakens,” he could not escape his critical instinct. He stated, “That’s understandable, not to continue watching your own movies due to knowing you have no control over the outcome.” He feels that the director’s vision ultimately governs the films, leading him to support his acting choices rather than critique them.
Even though Driver remains hesitant about viewing his movies, his legacy as Kylo Ren continues to resonate with fans. As he puts it, what’s in the final product is what counts, despite his earlier vow to not engage with his work.
