Adesanya and Pereira Discuss Legacy Ahead of UFC 320 Rematch
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira are two iconic figures in mixed martial arts, and their legacies will be in the spotlight during UFC 320. The event is set for October 4, 2025, where Pereira will rematch Magomed Ankalaev for the UFC light heavyweight title.
In a recent interview, former kickboxing champion Tyrone Spong spoke to MMA Fighting about the impact Adesanya and Pereira have had on the sport. Spong described his admiration for both fighters, naming them the most successful kickboxers to enter the UFC octagon. Initially torn on his answer, Spong concluded that Adesanya was the most successful because of his significant achievements in MMA.
Adesanya retired from kickboxing after a loss to Pereira in March 2017, deciding to focus fully on mixed martial arts. He joined the UFC the following year and won the interim middleweight title after five consecutive victories, including a notable win against Kelvin Gastelum.
Following a series of successful title defenses, Adesanya faced Pereira again in November 2022, losing in a dramatic fifth-round knockout. However, the New Zealander secured his revenge five months later, knocking out Pereira in Miami to reclaim the spotlight.
“Israel Adesanya was the most successful,” Spong stated. “He probably served as an inspiration for Alex, showing that success is possible. They have a history, and that likely bolstered Pereira’s confidence.”
Adesanya has not finalized his next fight following recent setbacks against Dricus Du Plessis and other contenders. Meanwhile, Pereira prepares for his highly anticipated rematch with Ankalaev at UFC 320.
Spong acknowledged the difficulty of predicting the outcome of the Pereira-Ankalaev bout, stating, “Styles make fights, and it might be tough for Pereira if he doesn’t adjust. I never make predictions, as anything can happen in the fight game.”
Reflecting on Pereira’s journey, Spong praised him for his remarkable achievements and resilience. “Pereira should be proud of what he has accomplished. His story is inspiring, and he has become a role model, particularly for those facing personal struggles,” Spong said.
As UFC 320 approaches, fans eagerly await the next chapter in the rivalry between Adesanya and Pereira.
