Agatha All Along” Emerges as Critically Divisive Marvel Series
“Agatha All Along,” a new spin-off series focused on the character Agatha Harkness from Marvel’s “WandaVision,” has sparked diverse reactions from critics and viewers alike. The series, which debuted amidst substantial expectations, currently holds a 67% critic score and a 77% audience score on popular aggregation sites, ranking it as one of the more controversial entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) television series canon.
Some industry analysts suggest that the mixed reviews can be attributed to a phenomenon described as “critical exhaustion” with the MCU’s extensive output. Nonetheless, viewers have shown a consistently higher tolerance, which places “Agatha All Along” as the fourth-worst among audience scores, yet still above certain other series such as “Secret Invasion” and “Echo.”
The series features Kathryn Hahn returning to her role as Agatha Harkness, the witch character from “WandaVision.” The narrative begins with Agatha awakening in the suburbs, a setting familiar to fans of the original series, after having been trapped by a containment spell. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer commented on how the show’s opening scene was an intentional choice to present Agatha in a state of vulnerability, both physically and emotionally. “In the script, the idea was that she would emerge from the spell naked because that’s very witchy,” said Schaeffer in an interview with TV Line.
The series’ production and creative decisions, including the depiction of Agatha’s vulnerability through nudity, were met with surprise and curiosity from Marvel Studios executives, including president Kevin Feige. “Kathryn came to me, and she was like, ‘would Agatha stop to get a robe? I feel like she would go out there naked’,” explained Schaeffer. This approach symbolizes a stripping away of Agatha’s external fixtures to reveal her true self as she regains her powers.
The nine-episode series is part of Marvel Studios’ strategy to expand its streaming content on Disney+. While “Agatha All Along” may not yet have matched the acclaim of previous series like “WandaVision” or “Loki,” its potential for character development and narrative surprises, such as the possible return of key figures from the MCU, could elevate its standing by the series’ conclusion.
Despite its current standing, “Agatha All Along” is anticipated to draw increased engagement over its run, purely given the intrigue in its unanticipated story arcs and its fresh take on an established character.
