Aiyana-Lee’s Rise: From Instagram to Spike Lee’s Film

LOS ANGELES, CA — Aiyana-Lee, a rising talent discovered on Instagram, stars in Spike Lee‘s latest film, “Highest2Lowest.” Her journey from struggling artist to actress began when Lee reached out to her directly via a message on social media.

In an exclusive interview, Aiyana-Lee shared her experience meeting the legendary filmmaker. “He DMed me on Instagram… it is insane,” she said. Lee not only cast her in the film but named it after her song, which she wrote before their collaboration.

Aiyana-Lee described their connection as genuine, stating, “We immediately just had incredible conversations. He gave me the history of film… and how he’s bridged the gap between film and music.” Before meeting Lee, she faced significant challenges. “I was almost homeless one year, and then I met Spike Lee, and then I was in a film,” she explained. “I feel like anyone can. So there’s still hope.”

The song “Highest2Lowest” resonates with both her character in the film and her personal journey. Aiyana-Lee noted Lee’s collaborative approach, saying, “He had a lot of input… his way of being is really to inspire the artist.” She admired how he amplified her voice, especially in an industry that often overlooks female songwriters.

Working alongside Oscar winner Denzel Washington, who plays a music executive, Aiyana-Lee felt inspired. “He is just a superstar when he walks on set… a sweet, humble human being who was nothing but encouraging,” she said. Washington even encouraged her to sing live during breaks on set, creating a surreal moment.

Aiyana-Lee’s performance was further influenced by her family’s musical heritage, being the niece of David Ruffin of The Temptations and granddaughter of soul legend Jimmy Ruffin. “I feel endlessly inspired by what they were able to do and pioneer,” she said.

With her heartwarming story and talent, Aiyana-Lee aims to carve her own path while honoring her legacy. “It’s a very interesting thing to have that legacy… but at the same time, kind of have to start from zero,” she reflected.
