Akron Schools Board Launches Misconduct Probe Amid Superintendent Controversy
AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Public Schools Board of Education announced early Tuesday that an investigation into unspecified allegations of misconduct involving Superintendent Michael Robinson is underway. The board, after a lengthy executive session, confirmed that the law firm Brennan Manna Diamond has been appointed as the factfinder and has begun reviewing documents and conducting interviews.
The board’s statement, read by newly elected President Carla Jackson, emphasized that no timeline has been set for the investigation to ensure a thorough and impartial review. “The final report will be made public,” Jackson said, though no additional details were provided.
The investigation, launched last month, has sparked controversy within the community. Robinson has faced public accusations of misconduct, including allegations of inappropriate behavior toward employees and the use of derogatory language to describe female journalists. Despite calls from the Akron Education Association to place Robinson on administrative leave during the probe, the board has not taken such action.
“True equity means holding every individual accountable to the same rules and expectations,” said Don Malarcik, attorney for the Akron Education Association, in a statement last week. The association has criticized the board for what it perceives as inconsistent standards in handling investigations involving district employees.
During Monday’s meeting, public comment reflected the community’s divided opinions. Cynthia Blake, a speaker, defended Robinson, arguing that calls for his suspension were politically motivated. “We need Dr. Robinson to continue the fight for our children,” Blake said. Meanwhile, parent William Reynolds criticized the district’s response to anonymous posters criticizing Robinson, calling it an overreach of power.
The board also elected new leadership during the meeting, with Carla Jackson chosen as president in a 4-3 vote. Jackson, a middle school administrator at Emmanuel Christian Academy, is in her fourth year on the board. Her election came after a contentious vote, with some members supporting Barbara Sykes for the position.
As the investigation continues, the board has pledged to provide updates and maintain transparency. However, the lack of specific details about the allegations and the timeline for resolution has left many in the community seeking answers.
