Alexis Bledel Reflects on Leaving The Handmaid’s Tale Before Finale

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Alexis Bledel has spoken out about her departure from the popular Hulu series, The Handmaid’s Tale, just days ahead of its highly anticipated series finale on May 27. Bledel, who played Emily/Ofglen for four seasons, shared her reflections during a recent interview.
“It was deeply upsetting to even imagine Emily going through something like that—being captured, powerless, with no say over her body,” Bledel, 43, said in an interview on May 22. She felt that her connection with the character was instant, recounting how she agreed to take the role as soon as she read the pilot script.
The series, which airs its finale this week, depicts a grim reality based on Margaret Atwood‘s dystopian novel. Emily’s experiences in Gilead included punishment in the form of being sent to the colonies, a toxic landscape for prisoners, and her involvement in violent acts against the oppressive regime.
Bledel originally announced her decision to exit the series last May, saying, “After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time.” She expressed gratitude to the creator, Bruce Miller, and the production team for their support throughout her time on the show.
Fellow cast members have echoed Bledel’s sentiments about her departure. Samira Wiley, who played Moira, expressed that it was challenging to say goodbye to a co-star who helped shape the series. Elizabeth Moss, who starred as June, also expressed sadness over Bledel’s exit, mentioning their long friendship.
As the show prepares for its finale, fans are reflecting on the profound impact of Bledel’s role. The last episode of The Handmaid’s Tale will air on Hulu on May 27, marking the end of an era for the beloved yet harrowing series.
