Almodóvar Accepts Chaplin Award In New York

NEW YORK, NY — Celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar expressed strong criticism of President Donald Trump during his acceptance of the Chaplin Award at Lincoln Center on Monday night. Almodóvar, known for movies like ‘Talk to Her’ and ‘The Room Next Door,’ spoke at Alice Tully Hall where he received the prestigious honor for his artistic contributions.

In a passionate speech, Almodóvar addressed the current political climate, stating, ‘I doubted if it was appropriate to come to a country ruled by a narcissistic authority, who doesn’t respect human rights.’ He emphasized the importance of recognizing reality, insisting that immigrants are not criminals and condemning Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine.

Almodóvar also dedicated his award to transgender actress Hunter Schafer, stating, ‘Hunter Schafer is a woman even if her passport says she is male.’ He remarked that his achievements were part of a broader cultural narrative that includes acknowledging marginalized voices.

As he addressed Trump, he said, ‘You will go down in history as the greatest mistake of our time. Your naiveté is only comparable to your violence. You will go down in history as a catastrophe.’ His remarks come as Trump’s approval ratings decline among U.S. voters.

Almodóvar’s speech also connected with his experiences growing up under the Franco dictatorship in Spain, reflecting on how it shaped his views on freedom and expression. ‘It is impossible to explain what that feeling of absolute liberty meant for a young person who wanted to make films,’ he explained.

The Chaplin Award, which honors significant contributions to cinema, was awarded to Almodóvar in recognition of his creative legacy. Previous winners include major talents like Morgan Freeman and Meryl Streep.
