SEATTLE, Wash. — In a memo to Amazon employees on June 17, 2025, CEO Andy Jassy outlined the company’s embrace of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on the workforce.

Jassy described generative AI as a “once-in-a-lifetime” technology that is transforming customer experiences and business operations. He indicated that the integration of AI tools will likely lead to a reduction in the corporate workforce.

“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” Jassy said. He emphasized that while the company is making significant strides, the potential is only beginning to unfold.

Amazon currently has over 1,000 generative AI applications in development, which Jassy believes are only a small fraction of what the company can ultimately achieve. “We’re going to lean in further in the coming months,” he added.

Jassy highlighted various AI initiatives already in place, including an advanced version of the Alexa personal assistant called Alexa+, an AI shopping assistant, and improved seller support tools. These innovations aim to enhance the shopping experience for customers and streamline operations for sellers.

In the company’s fulfillment networks, AI is being deployed for inventory management, demand forecasting, and improving the efficiency of warehouse robots.

Jassy urged employees to become knowledgeable about AI, participate in workshops, and experiment with the technology. He expressed excitement for what lies ahead as generative AI reshapes how Amazon operates.

Other tech leaders have echoed similar sentiments about AI’s disruptive potential. For instance, CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski noted a significant reduction in headcount at his company due in part to the integration of AI. Jassy’s comments come amid expectations that significant job transformations may occur in various industries.

As Amazon continues to evolve, Jassy remains optimistic, stating that those who embrace AI technology will be well-positioned for the future.
