Amy Poehler Recalls Fun Times with Will Arnett on ‘Blades of Glory’

LOS ANGELES, CA — Amy Poehler recently shared her experience working with her ex-husband Will Arnett in the film Blades of Glory during an episode of her podcast. The 53-year-old actress spoke about the unique situation, where the couple played siblings Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg, despite being married in real life.
“That was really fun,” Poehler said on the April 23 episode. She recounted that test audiences did not favor their characters, leading to surprising reactions from podcast hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. Yang questioned, “What do you mean? They’re the villains.”
Blades of Glory, released in 2007, follows figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy as they attempt to restore their reputations through a comeback as a pairs team. Poehler and Arnett portrayed the rival duo in the sports comedy.
Poehler recalled the reception of their characters, saying, “We were like, ‘Well, we’re the villains!’ But to the directors’ [Josh Gordon and Will Speck] credit, I think they kept a lot of it in.” She added that they participated in many promotional activities, including photo shoots and DVD extras.
The couple, who married in 2003 and welcomed two sons, Archie in 2008 and Abel in 2010, announced their separation in September 2012. Arnett filed for divorce in 2014, finalizing the process in August 2016, yet they have maintained a friendly relationship since.
In a recent episode of Arnett’s podcast, SmartLess, he praised their co-parenting approach. “Of course, things take a minute because everybody is sort of adjusting to what it is,” he shared. “I’m really, really lucky to have her as a partner in this way.”
Both actors continue to support each other’s careers, and Arnett made a humorous comment about their communications, stating, “There aren’t many people I speak to more than I speak to her, which is weird…”
