Andra Day Bet Awards Tribute Performance

Los Angeles, CA – Andra Day delivered a moving tribute to legendary singer Roberta Flack during the 2025 BET Awards on Monday night, June 9. Performing “Killing Me Softly With His Song” at the Peacock Theater, Day’s heartfelt rendition was accompanied by a small string section and backup singers, captivating the audience.

“Andra Day singing a Roberta Flack tribute? Ohhhh BET played NO games this year,” an audience member exclaimed. Another fan expressed excitement, saying, “Put it in my veins!” The song, originally released by Flack in 1973, became her second No. 1 hit. It won Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female at the 1974 Grammy Awards.

The Fugees later popularized the song again in 1996, winning a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Flack’s powerful influence on music was evident in the tribute, especially following the announcement of her passing. According to her spokesperson, Flack “died peacefully surrounded by her family.”

The “In Memoriam” segment not only featured Day but also included performances by artists like Chris Jasper of the Isley Brothers and Voletta Wallace, the mother of The Notorious B.I.G. Other notable attendees included hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins and Kool & the Gang‘s Michael Sumler.

Earlier in the evening, other performers like Miles Caton from Sinners showcased tracks, including “The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite)” as part of the tribute festivities. The atmosphere at the Peacock Theater was filled with love and remembrance for an icon whose impact will be felt for generations.
