Andre Agassi Tennis Fashion Jorts Bandanas

LOS ANGELES, April 17, 2025 — Tennis legend Andre Agassi revisited his most memorable on-court outfits in a recent Instagram post, celebrating a fashion journey that has influenced tennis culture for decades.

In the April 16 video, Agassi, 54, shared what he called his “three favorite looks” from his illustrious career, recalling styles that still resonate today. His picks spanned over two decades, featuring vivid recollections of outfits that broke the conventional mold of tennis attire.

Agassi opened his countdown with the No. 3 position: his ensemble from the 1995 Australian Open, where he triumphed over rival Pete Sampras. Dressed in a red bandana, oversized tennis gear, and dangling hoop earrings, he humorously referred to the look as the “pirate look.” “Baggy shorts, baggy shirt, bandana, hoop earring, goatee — it was kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean,” Agassi said in his video, drawing a playful comparison to Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, a character who would not debut on screen until 2003.

For his second favorite, Agassi shifted to a staple of 1990s fashion: denim shorts, or jorts. He noted how revolutionary it was for a tennis player to wear anything other than the traditional white attire. “Tennis hadn’t quite seen somebody wear anything but white with their shirts tucked in,” he explained, referencing his memorable 1988 U.S. Open appearance in acid-wash jorts created by Nike.

Closing his countdown, Agassi highlighted his bold look from the early ’90s that paired his denim shorts with a vibrant, matching pink top, a pink headband, and Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 sneakers, famously worn at the 1990 French Open. Reflecting on that timeframe, he recalled his reaction to proposed dress codes: “You know, I did what any normal person would do and I called him a bozo in the press conference. That was a little regrettable, but it was an honest reaction to someone telling me what I had to wear.”

Agassi’s comments on fashion sparked memories of a time when his vibrant style was met with mixed reactions from tennis authorities. He recalled being labeled an “accidental icon” in a past interview and noted, “The goal was never to be ugly in my mind…I was always clear. I was anti-establishment for a long time,” reinforcing his intent to shake up tennis norms.

Recently, Agassi and fellow tennis star Steffi Graf, whom he married in 2001, discussed their journey in the sport and how they navigate their careers together. While the return of jorts on the court remains uncertain, Agassi emphasized their focus on growing the game. “We really want to grow the game,” he said, referring to their shared love for pickleball. “While all types of sports lovers are playing, the age keeps getting younger.”

In the world of tennis, Agassi’s fashion choices have been as significant as his athletic achievements. For many, they signify a shift towards individuality in a sport often dominated by tradition.
