Andre Drummond Steps Up Amid Injuries for Sixers
PHILADELPHIA, PA — With star center Joel Embiid dealing with knee soreness, Andre Drummond has proven to be a crucial asset for the Philadelphia 76ers this season. The Sixers signed Drummond to a two-year, $10 million contract last offseason, a deal many fans initially supported.
Drummond’s first stint with the Sixers in the 2021-22 season endeared him to the fan base. However, injuries plagued his last season, limiting him to an average of 7.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. After a toe injury sidelined him for much of the year, there were discussions about possibly trading him to clear salary cap space.
This offseason, the Sixers opted to keep Drummond on the roster despite these predictions. Currently, Embiid has missed the last four games, and with rookie Adem Bona out as well, Drummond emerged as the team’s only consistent big man against a formidable Los Angeles Clippers squad on Monday.
In a standout performance, Drummond played 38 minutes, scoring 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and grabbing 18 rebounds. His performance exceeded that of Clippers center Ivica Zubac, who managed only 14 points and 13 rebounds in 34 minutes.
Last season, the Sixers were a top team in the NBA, but their early performance this year has been more mediocre. Drummond has regained his form and is averaging 3.2 offensive rebounds per game this season, showcasing his skills as a dominant rebounder.
Notably, Drummond’s offensive game has also improved. He has already made seven three-pointers this season, surpassing his previous career-high for a single season within the first few weeks. “What everybody’s known for my 14 seasons of playing is getting a lot of rebounds and finishing in the paint,” Drummond said post-game. “But now I’m getting it in the flow of the offense, and I’m knocking down big shots.”
While Drummond’s style differs from other prolific centers, his ability to score from the perimeter could shift defensive tactics against him. During the game against the Clippers, he hit a pivotal three-pointer that helped the Sixers rally late.
Although Drummond may not be the starting center, his capability to temporarily replace Embiid is invaluable for a team that has previously struggled with backup centers. Upgrading from previous options, Drummond’s performance this season has been encouraging as the team navigates the absence of their star player.
As the season progresses, the Sixers need Embiid back in the lineup for a strong playoff push. However, Drummond’s contribution is vital now more than ever, especially with both Embiid and Bona sidelined. Had the team decided to waive Drummond, their situation could have been significantly worse.
