NEW YORK, NY — Angela Bassett stars as President Evelyn Mitchell in Netflix‘s new conspiracy thriller, ‘Zero Day.’ The series premiered recently, igniting discussions around its dramatic portrayal of a cyberattack that shut down systems for one minute and resulted in 3,000 deaths.

In this gripping series, former President George Mullen, played by Robert De Niro, is called back to lead an investigative commission by President Mitchell. The plot thickens as public opinion sways due to radical commentary from a character reminiscent of Joe Rogan, played by Dan Stevens.

“We wanted to create an authentic feel,” said Michael S. Schmidt, a co-creator who previously worked for NBC News. “The realism is intentional in how we portray the political landscape and the personal stakes involved.”

Despite Mullen’s leading role, President Mitchell’s influence remains crucial. “She has an agenda not immediately clear,” Schmidt added. “Bassett brings a unique authority that balances the narrative.”

Bassett has portrayed several iconic characters, from Tina Turner in ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ to Queen Ramonda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, ‘Zero Day’ marks her first presidential role. “With Angela, you need a president who can hand over reins to someone else while managing her own responsibilities,” Schmidt explained.

Reflecting on her character, Bassett elaborated that even though her appearances are limited, they carry substantial weight. “Every time she is on screen, it should be impactful,” Bassett noted. “She has to assert her authority, negotiating her position amidst a crisis.”

When asked about President Mitchell’s future after Mullen’s controversial decisions, Bassett commented, “She is hoping for another four years, but she must navigate the fallout from his actions to maintain her integrity.”

Bassett utilized extensive research to prepare for her role, drawing inspiration from figures such as Shirley Chisholm and Stacey Abrams. “Leadership in political spaces comes with great responsibility and resilience,” she said. “You have to embody that complexity.”

On the dynamic between Bassett and De Niro, she stated, “Our mutual experience as actors translates into our characters’ interactions. There is a power mutuality that adds depth to the narrative.”

Both Bassett and De Niro praised the show’s premise, acknowledging its reflection of modern issues surrounding technology and politics. Bassett shared her hopes for the representation of women in leadership roles in the series. “To see this changed dynamic, I welcome it,” she said. “I hope it resonates with audiences.”

‘Zero Day’ is currently streaming all six episodes on Netflix, portraying a politically-charged drama that explores trust, integrity, and ambition within a contemporary context.
