Anjelica Huston’s Heartfelt Return to Ranch Life Amid Wildfires

Ranch, California – Anjelica Huston, a Hollywood icon, has found solace at her Sierra Nevada ranch after facing wildfires that forced her to leave her Los Angeles home. The 73-year-old actress, known for her roles in classic films and her recent work in BritBox's murder mystery, is shifting her focus to animal advocacy.
Huston spoke with PEOPLE about her new role as a "donkey advocate," explaining her commitment to helping wild donkeys in the area. "Donkeys are not the showiest, but they’re some of the sweetest animals I’ve ever met. I think they could always use more publicity," she said in a phone interview from her ranch.
Living full-time at the ranch since January, Huston evacuated her home during the wildfires last year. "It turned out to be okay, but it’s taken this long to remediate because I had damage and several windows blown out," she noted. Despite the challenges, she felt fortunate to find refuge in the countryside.
Huston recalled the surprise of receiving a caring message from her former partner Jack Nicholson, who checked in on her during the crisis. “It was heartbreakingly sweet. I’ve gone back over it several times in my head, and I think next time I’d accept the invitation,” she reflected on their enduring bond.
Having purchased the ranch in 1984 after visiting a friend in the area, Huston describes her attachment to the land. "I immediately pronounced it coyote country, which it kind of is. It’s a small town and it’s very colloquial and easy to get along with here. You don’t have to dress for dinner. I spend my time around the animals and riding, and it’s been very pleasurable," she said.
Through the years, Huston has reaffirmed her decision to embrace rural life. “When I first bought it, it was something that nobody did. They’d go, ‘What do you mean you’ve bought a place in the country?’ I know I was mad, but it was a very sane decision,” she remarked.
Today, simple joys bring her happiness. “I love to walk in the rain, I love to see my friends, and I love to have a good part in the movie and be proud of something I’ve done,” Huston said, encapsulating her contentment in the quiet moments.
